Broccoli!
Two kinds of broccoli: Fiesta and Green King, 65 of each. Seeded into 1 1/2″ soil blocks because they love the compost.

I’m a first year farmer. Constructed a small greenhouse (11′x26′) this winter for seedlings. Chose to go with soil blocks. I’m having a bit of difficulty with the medium. I get good sprouting, emergence, and growth for the first 2 weeks or so and then plants struggle. Slow growth, and yellowing. The brassica’s are the worst. Shriveling up cotyledons. I’m thinking a nitrogen problem. I used a woodchip based compost in the blocks and was recently told that that’s the problem. I’m going to run some trials with vegie compost and worm castings. What is your mix? What is your mix for your broccoli? Why do you use trays for some things and blocks for others. I’m sure you’re busy with the season but any help would greatly appreciated. I have about 4-5 thousand seedlings that are just languishing right now. It’s so sad to go in the greenhouse. Some are over a month and half old and are no larger than 1/2″.
Thanks so much….

Hi Matt. I’ve been using a mix of commercial potting mix (Fafard’s Organic 20) and compost (2 to 1).
I have to say though that I’ve about given up on soil blocks. Too much trouble keeping them from drying out, at least in my climate. Plug trays are just so much faster and easier.
